Closed for Winter

Even the sunflowers know when to close up shop for the coming winter.  Shorter days, cooler nights, changing seasons all send the signal--winter is coming soon.  Hope you enjoyed the summer....

Reflection - derelict gas station

Near our neighborhood is a corner gas station that has been vacant for years and years.  The remaining guts of the gas pumps and the roof over the pumps are still standing but have gradually deteriorated until they really have become a derelict and eyesore.  After a recent rain storm I knelt down close to a rain puddle and snapped this reflection image of the derelict gas station.  We all would like someone to come and tear it all out--a vacant lot would be a huge improvement over this relic.

Move towards the light

Somewhere along the way freedom for religious expression has become freedom from religious expression and the morals, commitments and comportment of too many in society have declined to a sad state of affairs.  The light has gone out in far too many cases.  It is light that dissipates the darkness. Move towards the light with love and kindness for all.

Orchid blossom

"Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are they charming gardeners who make our souls blossom."  Marcel Proust

An appropriate message for this image of an orchid blossom brightening up our dining room thanks be to my brother and his family who sent the plant our way.

Power

"Circumstances are beyond human control, but our conduct is in our own power."  Benjamin Disraeli

Seemed to be an appropriate quote for this picture of a couple of commercial power meters...

After a storm comes a calm

The calm after the storm.  Even the birds can rest.  Straightening up the pole, eliminating the distractions at the bottom of the photo with some cropping and some cloning and then boosting the contrast in clouds makes this final image a simple, yet  powerful one.  Just a little scenery from my morning walk.

Arches

Standing outside of the LDS Temple in Bountiful, Utah waiting for the bride and groom.  These arches looked much better when converted to black and white--at least to me.  And beautiful arches they are...

Unique Wedding Cake

Now here is a unique wedding cake.  One for the peach harvest season with a real rustic look.  Can't say I have ever seen one like this before.  However, it fit the wedding reception theme and decor perfectly.  Even more importantly, it fit the couple perfectly.  Nice wedding day all around for those involved.  I was happy to witness part of it.

Temple Dedication Day

Today the LDS Temple in Ogden, Utah is being dedicated.  The prior one at that location was torn down and replaced by a newly constructed building.  No, today's photo is not one of the new Ogden temple.  It is the temple in Bountiful, Utah--one of the relatively close neighboring temples to that in Ogden.  However, I was not at the Ogden location recently but did attend a wedding at this Bountiful temple this weekend.  And I can actually see this temple on the hill in Bountiful from my bedroom window.  Therefore, this is the temple picture posted today in commemoration of the dedication day today for its nearby neighbor

Watching. Watching. Everywhere watching.

At least these kind of cameras are visible and we know we are being watched.  No so much with many that are hidden, the emails, texts and phone calls that are monitored and the tracking of our every movement and activity.  Oh well, life in the modern world...  No this one is not on a prison wall, just on a parking lot garage ramp.

Watching.  Watching.  Everywhere watching.

Shopping. Again. Still.

Shopping carts, guitars, dresses... Yep, all in an afternoon out on the town.  Must be a slow day--all the shopping carts are parked instead of out in the isles.

Just trying to measure up....

Lego Man Joe is just trying to measure up.  It's all relative--depending on where on the scale you start, right?  After all, by what measure do you rate yourself?  What are the important measures for you?  Does it really matter what others think anyway?

Blind design

Seriously this started out as a photo of the sun streaming through some window blinds as you can see in the original image photo below.  By playing with the image in post-processing and applying the Symmetry Quad filter to the end result I came up with this blind design.  There is some fun stuff that you can do with photos--creating all kinds of interesting images.  Enjoy!

The huddle

So just what do you call a collection of butternut squash?  A gaggle?  A group?  A herd?  Well, forget about even asking Google--I just made the decision on my own.  I will call this collection of butternut squash "the huddle."

Free Flowing

While walking around a local hospital we came upon the outdoor park area where water flows freely, benches and tables in the shade accommodate restful relaxation and cafeteria or picnic food consumption and time seems to slow down.  Definitely a place much different than being in a hospital room or wandering the halls of the institution.

Blinded

Late afternoon sun through the window blinds makes it hard to see when the sun steams directly into your eyes--which is the case where my desktop computer sits.  At this time I have to adjust the blinds to eliminate the leaking sun so as not to be blinded.  Now, in my next house I should get blinds with a remote control or blinds on a timer to self adjust.  What?  Me?  lazy?

What big eyes you have my dear

Only in Barbie dolls and Disney cartoon princesses are the eyes much larger than fit the face and out of proportion to the head.  I guess it must work because they both have been around forever--Barbies and Disney princesses.  Oh yeah, then there was also the wolf in the Littler Red Riding Hood story as the girls observes...."what big eyes you have...."

My feelings exactly

I was out doing a little shopping.....well, okay, my sweet wife was doing the shopping and I was along for the therapy of being out of my recliner and walking around since that is what the doctor ordered.  Anyway, we were shopping and along the way ran across this little guy.  The ear-to-ear smile summarizes my feelings exactly--how I feel after a successful surgery that solved a nagging nerve issue that has hung on for over 6 years.

Hairy Backside

Out walking today and came across this sunflower at sunset.  Everyone always takes photos of the flower frontsides.  I decided to try capturing a few of the backside.  Of the many on my camera roll, I liked this one the best.  Shows a bit of the hairy backside when back lit by the sun.

Yes, it happens

Okay, it's the end of a long and busy day and I still have not captured a photo for my daily post.  So as I walk by a large bunch of balloons in the house, I snap a photo of this one.  Yes, we did celebrate one this week--they seem to come and go like clockwork.  So, nothing by the ordinary today but at least I made it before the day's end.

Bonus Double

The reward for this morning's early therapy walk was capturing this full-circle fantastic double rainbow that popped out in the neighborhood just as I started my walk.  Wow!  It has been so nice to walk again without pain and to get out and about in the neighborhood.  Just doing so this week I have already learned a lot about the happenings and comings and goings of those around us.  Nice to be back....
